Morning Mist on the Hudson

Prior to the completion of the Erie Canal the upstate New York region was emerging as the major shipment point for goods from the interior territories bound for Manhattan.  With increased demands there were new designs for merchant vessels on the inland waterways.  There are a number of unusual Hudson River sailing craft in this 1790 view of Albany.  In the left foreground a square-rigged colonial ketch is taking on cargo.  The larger vessel in the right foreground is a periagua, to its right is an English hoy, and in the center background a gundeloe makes its way upriver.  These new vessels not only contributed to commercial growth but, as trade expanded, they helped to spread the population along the banks of the Hudson.
