Vischer's Ferry This image depicts Vischer’s Ferry landing on the Mohawk River in upstate New York circa 1908. The cable-operated ferry had been in service for many years and proved to be the most reliable means for crossing the Mohawk. This fact was borne out in 1901, when a one-year-old bridge was destroyed by ice, leading to the return of ferry service until the 1920’s. In the background at the top of the hill one can also see a steam tugboat in the Erie Canal, which ran parallel to the Mohawk River. Little remains of this site today. However, visitors can still see the foundations of both the Erie Canal and the Mohawk River bridges.
