(click on image for detail) Nantucket Farewell The whaleship "Essex" rounds Great Point, Nantucket, on its final voyage, August 1819. In November of 1820, the "Essex" was attacked and sunk by a sperm whale in the Pacific Ocean. Eight men out of a crew of twenty survived a horrific four month ordeal at sea in open boats.
